The project

Henderson Golf completed an extensive 18-hole greens and bunker renovation at Grande Dunes Resort Course in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. Working with architect John A. Harvey, who was involved in the course's original design and construction, the four-month project focused on restoring key features that had changed over more than two decades of play. The renovation returned greens and bunkers closer to their original dimensions and character while introducing updated materials and infrastructure designed to improve long-term course performance.

The challenge

Since Grande Dunes opened in 2001, years of play and maintenance had gradually altered some of the scale and definition central to the original design. Putting surfaces had contracted substantially, limiting pin locations and changing how the green complexes played. Bunkers had also lost many of their distinctive contours and presented drainage and maintenance challenges. The goal was to recapture the bold character of the original course while improving playing conditions and creating features better equipped to perform under the demands of a high-volume Myrtle Beach golf destination.

Our approach

Working alongside Harvey, Henderson Golf rebuilt the course's greens and bunkers with careful attention to the original design. Greens were restored to their intended dimensions and regrassed with TifEagle ultradwarf bermudagrass, reclaiming nearly 40,000 square feet of putting surface, a 33 percent increase. Bunkers were reconstructed to restore their original shapes and contours, with floors cored out and new Capillary Concrete liners installed to improve drainage, reduce contamination and washouts, and provide more consistent playing conditions. The work combined detailed restoration with modern construction methods to preserve Grande Dunes' identity while improving how its most important playing features perform.

The result

The renovation restored the scale, strategy, and visual character that helped define Grande Dunes when it opened. Expanded greens created substantially more pinnable areas and helped distribute golfer traffic across larger putting surfaces, while reconstructed bunkers regained their distinctive character and improved resilience during severe weather. The latter was put to the test shortly after completion when Hurricane Ian brought approximately five inches of rain to the property. Grande Dunes reopened the following morning with very little bunker sand movement, providing a real-world demonstration of how the upgraded bunker infrastructure could support faster recovery and more consistent course conditions.
