The project

Henderson Golf completed a comprehensive 18-hole renovation of the Avocet Course at Wild Wing Golf Club in Conway, South Carolina. The project included rebuilding 19 greens, all bunkers, and tees as part of a course-wide restoration overseen by original architect Jeff Brauer. Originally designed by Brauer and major champion Larry Nelson, Avocet opened in 1993 and is known for its creative green complexes, bold bunkering, and memorable risk-reward design.

‍

The challenge

More than three decades after Avocet opened, time had changed some of the features that made the original design distinctive. Putting surfaces had gradually contracted, eliminating original pin locations and reducing strategic options around the greens. The course's extensive bunkering also presented an opportunity to improve drainage, consistency, and long-term maintenance while thoughtfully reducing the overall bunker footprint. Tee improvements were needed to create additional playing options for a broader range of golfers. The challenge was not to reinvent Avocet, but to restore its original character while improving course conditions, infrastructure, and playability for today's golfer.

Our approach

Working within Jeff Brauer's restoration plan, Henderson Golf executed the course-wide renovation by rebuilding 19 greens, all bunkers, and tees. Greens were expanded toward their original dimensions, restoring lost putting surface and creating additional pin and approach options. The bunker footprint was reduced from approximately 160,000 to 90,000 square feet, with bunkers reconstructed using new drainage and capillary concrete liners to improve consistency and reduce washouts and maintenance demands. Tee work, including new forward teeing options, complemented the broader effort to make Avocet more playable for a range of golfers while preserving the strategy of the original Brauer-Nelson design.

The result

The completed renovation gives Avocet a refreshed playing experience without sacrificing the personality that has distinguished the course since 1993. Expanded greens and approaches restore strategic playing options, rebuilt bunkers provide improved drainage and more consistent conditions, and updated tees make the course more adaptable for golfers of varying abilities. Signature architectural elements were also revived, including the “Valley of Sin” at the par-4 ninth. The result is a course that remains unmistakably Avocet while pairing its original character with renewed playing surfaces, improved infrastructure, and conditions designed to serve golfers and the maintenance team well into the future.
