King's North Golf Course

Renovation & Restoration

The project

King’s North at Myrtle Beach National underwent a comprehensive two-year renovation designed to carry one of the Grand Strand’s most recognizable courses into its next era. Originally shaped by Arnold Palmer’s vision, the project focused on restoring the character and strategy that made the course distinctive while introducing improvements for modern play. The renovation included rebuilt and expanded greens, reshaped bunkers, refined green surrounds and fairways, and enhancements to sightlines and playing options throughout the course.

The challenge

The challenge at King’s North was to modernize an iconic golf course without losing what made it special. Over time, greens had lost approximately 30,000 square feet of original putting surface, bunkers required renovation and improved drainage, and mounding around greens had limited options for approach and recovery shots. At the same time, any improvements needed to respect Arnold Palmer’s original design intent and preserve the rugged, sandy aesthetic and strategic character golfers had come to associate with King’s North.

Our approach

Working within architect Brandon Johnson’s vision for the renovation, the project called for careful execution across the course’s greens, bunkers, surrounds, and other playing features. Greens were restored and expanded to reclaim lost putting surface and establish additional pin positions, while bunkers were reshaped and rebuilt with improved liners, drainage, and new sand. Green surrounds and selected fairway features were also reworked to make better use of the existing contours and create more options for golfers to approach and recover both through the air and along the ground. The work was completed in two phases, allowing portions of King’s North to remain available for play while the transformation progressed.

The result

The completed renovation gives King’s North a renewed playing experience while maintaining the identity of the Arnold Palmer design. Restored fairway width, larger greens, redesigned bunkers, improved sightlines, and more varied recovery options have introduced new strategic possibilities throughout the course. The finished product balances preservation with progress, retaining the recognizable character of King’s North while positioning the course to serve the next generation of golfers.
