The project

Henderson Golf supported a comprehensive 18-hole renovation of Pawleys Plantation Golf & Country Club on Pawleys Island, South Carolina. The project restored greens, rebuilt bunkers, and expanded fairway areas as part of a larger effort to modernize the Jack Nicklaus-designed course while preserving its original character and strategy. Working with the renovation plan developed by Nicklaus Design associate Troy Vincent, the project brought key playing surfaces back toward their original dimensions while creating a more playable and maintainable course for the future.

The challenge

More than three decades of growth and play had gradually changed Pawleys Plantation from Nicklaus' original vision. Green complexes had contracted significantly, reducing available pin positions, while trees had narrowed fairway corridors and affected turf conditions. The course's signature sprawling bunkers also presented maintenance and playability challenges. The objective was to address those issues without diminishing the strategic challenge experienced players expect, creating more options and forgiveness for the average golfer while retaining the course's distinctive Lowcountry character.

‍

Our approach

Henderson Golf helped execute the restoration from the ground up. Every green complex and surrounding fringe was stripped, tilled, and restored toward its original specifications, ultimately reclaiming nearly 40,000 square feet of putting surface and introducing new TifEagle Bermudagrass. The bunker work included complete reconstruction, reshaping, improved drainage, new sand, and Capillary Concrete liners designed to hold sand in place and improve long-term bunker performance. Large fairway bunkers on multiple holes were removed or reconfigured to create expanded fairways, smaller strategic bunkers, and native areas, helping translate the architect's vision into a course that offers golfers more ways to play each hole.

The result

The renovation restored much of the scale, strategy, and visual character that had changed over Pawleys Plantation's first 35 years. Larger greens created significantly more pinnable areas, redesigned bunkering maintained strategic interest while improving playability, and expanded fairways provided more room without removing the challenge for accomplished golfers. The improvements also addressed long-term course performance, with reconstructed bunkers designed for better drainage and reduced washouts. The finished course reopened in October 2023 with a renewed playing experience that remains distinctly Pawleys Plantation while better serving today's golfers and maintenance team.
